I'll be visiting Las Vegas from this Thursday (Feb 26) to possibly Sunday (March 1). It's an unusual visit, not for fun or family but to accompany my best friend and his brother as they play a series of hockey games. Which I find only somewhat watchable as a sport. But it's a free ride, free hotel, free food, and I have an opportunity to use my mediocre blackjack skills, so it's somewhat possible I can make a profit from the visit.

Las Vegas has never appealed to me that much, for I'm not really a drinker, gambler, clubber, or retired. It just looks like an adult version of Chuck-E-Cheese's. The last time I visited was in 2007, and before that it was in 1995.

I'm not planning to see any shows (no not even Thunder from Down Under), so I'll basically be attending hockey games and looking for stuff to do. Any advice? The Mob Museum, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, and especially Hoover Dam appeal to me.

Also, if anyone in the area would like to hang out let me know, although I can't think of any Las Vegas (or even Nevada) forumites other than Joe Republic...

Interestingly enough, Las Vegas is the NHL's most desired location for expansion.

Mm hmm.

hahaha gee thanks Sad I'm not the Krampus. I'll be with my straight best friend the whole time, and you're completely unattractive to me, so I suppose that may be some consolation. Maybe we can go register voters? lol

Uh, no. That would be Seattle (followed by Quebec City)

Are either of those cities currently having a season ticket drive?

Put a couple bucks on the Utah Utes to win the national championship. With Kentucky so overvalued, there's a lot of steals on the futures odds. Plus, Delon Wright's a baller.

Enjoy!

I'm pretty sure any season ticket drive in Vegas would pale in comparison to Quebec City. Las Vegas might work because there is no pro sports competition, but it's not exactly hockey crazy.

I've been to Vegas plenty of times back when I lived in Los Angeles. If you're looking for a great burger or alcoholic milkshake, try Holsteins at the Cosmopolitan. For an amazingly good breakfast, try Hash House at the Linq (the homemade preserves that they give you gratis are amazing). If you like high-quality mexican food, I absolutely love Javier's in Aria. It's pricey, but the Mole is worth it.

You'll want to shop around a bit if you're playing blackjack. Most casinos now only pay 6:5 on blackjacks (total bull$hit) and have a $10 minimum bet or higher. I like taking a cab to the SLS to play Blackjack, because they still pay 3:2 on multideck and occasionally have $5 tables. It'll cost you a couple bucks for the cab ride, but you should make it back if you're playing for any length of time. Plus, if you join their card program, they'll give you $5 or $10 free to gamble with.

When I visited in 2012 on my way driving to LA, I decided to give skydiving a try. There are companies that will pick you up right from your hotel and drive you to the airfield. If you've got a sense of adventure, it's totally worth it. It makes for an incredibly memorable Vegas experience.

Yea, I've been searching online for casinos that play 3:2 on blackjack. I found this extensive list a few days ago:

Thanks for the food recommendations though, I love a good breakfast Smiley

Of course it's probably a bad idea.  Doesn't mean it's not what the NHL brass seem to be set on.  I personally think it's abhorrant that the NHL would put another team in the desert while hockey-crazy Quebec City is about to hit two decades without a team.

Ahh. Well, when they were talking about moving Phoenix/Arizona, the media said Seattle was the most likely choice (much to my chagrin).

It seems like they want to expand to Seattle and Vegas; and leave Quebec as a relocation option for the Panthers/Coyotes/Hurricanes/etc.

Misleading title. I was hoping you and HockeyDude were going on a crazy, sex-drugs-and-rock'n'roll-filled rampage through Sin City.

Retromike is the last human being on the planet I would be going on a romp through Vegas with... But thanks for thinking of me.

The drive begins. I'll reckon a bluegrass hitlist on my iPod shall accompany the trip. Damn it's cramped in the back seat of this truck, but it's probably more room than flying coach. I keep thinking about the fifteen page paper on the ineffectiveness of city websites and its effect on democracy that I'll have to begin when I return. But I need a break. I've managed too many family dramas. I'm on my way, Joe Wink
