In Kentucky, former Gov. Julian Carroll is now a state senator. (At least I think he still is.)

In modern politics, the closest thing is former candidates for Senate getting elected to Congress.

Ken Buck in Colorado is a recent example. He lost a close race for Senate in 2010 (largely due to his own mistakes) but then ran for the House in 2014 when the incumbent Congressman decided to run for Senate.
