It's possible that Hillary Clinton will lose the General Election.

It's possible that Democrats will nominate another woman in 2020, be it Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gilibrand, Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, or whoever. And the Republican President might be reelected.

How would this affect the party? Would activists be inclined to see it as a coincidence, or as a sign that men are more electable?

If history is any guide, after the Al Smith landslide loss, we had to wait 8 elections for the next Catholic nominee.

If Hillary loses it will become evident she lost because she either ran a bad campaign or the environment was just too toxic for her to win.  I don't think anyone will blame gender for her loss but it will definitely lower expectations and excitement for the next female candidate.
