If their is truly such a thing as an outright impossible switch, it's probably this. I literally can't think of a single case of how this is possible.

It's possible, and odds are a tiny number of people voted that way, but obviously they were very rare and hard to pin down.

Maybe some Californians voted for Fremont for his home state being California, then voted Breckinridge.  Then again, even they were rare since Lincoln outperformed Fremont in California.

I guess it would probably be someone in Maine or Vermont. In Maine, Fremont won 4,000 more votes than Lincoln in 1860, while Breckenridge received 6.31%. In Vermont, Fremont won 6,000 more votes than Lincoln in 1860, with Breckenridge at 4.19%.

Pennsylvania?

Breckenridge won about 40 percent of the vote in the state.

That is likely as well. However, Lincoln greatly out-polled Fremont in Pennsylvania, so it's hard to say.

A voter is possible, but it would be highly idiosyncratic. None in Breckenridge's home state since Fremont was not on the ballot, and his running mate's home was still a territory. There were quite a few Fremont/Douglas voters, esp in New England.  Those votes for Breckenridge in PA were practically all Buchanan voters in 56 - in fact the reason why Breckenridge got those votes is because he got the support of the Buchanan faction.

Perhaps a hesitant anti-Nebraska voter who gets cold feet when the South starts threatening secession?

I think that sounds more like a potential Fremont/Bell voter.
