After a close election over Reagan in 1980, Bentsen was ready to begin his term. However, all was not to be after several bullets struck Bentsen in early 1980. After being injured, he came out alive but unfit to serve as president. As a result he resigned, and Gary Hart became the next president. His policies, much more liberal than the president before him, resulted in a backlash of candidates running against him. One came at him hard from Bentsen's camp, Governor Bob Graham of Florida. The other three came after him from his left. The Reverend Jesse Jackson, who wanted more civil rights legislation, Senator Ted Kennedy, who wished to pass healthcare reform and restore the Kennedy legacy, and Shirley Chisholm, who wanted to pass the ERA.

The Republican nomination was also an interesting one. President Ronald Reagan was running again with the hope of reuniting the party against a liberal president, but was considered damaged goods. His Vice-President Edward Brooke was also running from the more liberal wing of the party, also hoping to be the first African-American President. The new Senator from California and former representative, Barry Goldwater Jr. was considered the alternative to Reagan, non-damaged goods and was also hoping to restore his family name. Governor Tom Kean of New Jersey was running as the moderate, the in-betweener who believed there was a niche for a bridge over the gap between conservative and liberal, while still holding credentials of being a governor.

Hart. Ousting a successful incumbent president in the primaries is a very, very silly thing to do.

And I would've voted Hart over Mondale anyway in the primaries IRL.
