http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/slovenian-lawmakers-approve-sex-marriage-adoption-29363594

By a vote of 51:28, lawmakers approved the notion to legalise SSMs and adoption for same-sex couples, amongst criticism from conservative and church groups. Slovenia is the first former Yugolsavian country and also first country in Eastern Europe to legalise SSMs.

Slovenia is more or less a Slavic and less Catholic version of Austria, so that is not (in itself) so bad.

Meanwhile in Slovakia, over 90% voted against SSM... Why so different? Is Slovakia more religious?

There was a very low turnout in the Slovak referendum after the pro-gay/civil rights side advocated a boycott, so you can not really use the 90%+ figure to say anything in itself.

Northern Slovakia is very traditionally Catholic (see the thread about the referendum as to why).

Slovenia is only 55% Catholic now and with low church attendance.

What's wrong with Slovenia?  I find this post offensive (you seem to think that your country is more ...civilized than Slovenia and you're therefore surprised they have more progressive laws than you do).

Should we be chocked over that, Slovenia have always (at least the last 8 hundred years) been part of the more developed part of Europe. Even under communism it was the best part of the best communist country.

There's a long history behind why Slovenia is more developed than Slovakia, going back to the conquest of Slovenia by the Franks and the fall of Great Moravia.

In short they have little in common except for their name and their name are simply a result of them being Slavic subjects of non-Slavic rulers (their names simply means Slavs). In fact we could just as well have a third group in eastern Croatia being called Slavonians, but those was assimilated into the Croatian national state in the 19th century.

To compare the Welsh, the Wallons and the Vlachs (Romanians and Aromanians) also have names which original meant the same, "foreigner" in the Old Germanic languages. This doesn't mean that they have a lot in common, they was just given a name by another people.

I doubt he meant anything sinister by it; to test this, I told a number of friends that Slovenia had just legalised same-sex marriage and all of them said the same thing, nearly verbatim.

The level of frustration among the younger population towards the Australian government regarding this issue is, indeed, a mirror image to that of other countries.  It's a slight against our federal MPs more than a comment regarding Slovenia.

Really?

Really?

Ebowed has represented my views clearly, rather than get offended about an innocent comment, you could have asked for clarification.

Thanks.
