The calendar still says winter and most of the country feels like winter, but in the weather world today, March 1, 2015 is the beginning of the Spring season!!  Warmer air is on the way!!

It's nice of it to come in the midst of our snow season we're having here.

The extra hour of daylight when is set for Sunday, when the sun starts to intensify on April 20th is where spring really begins. Right now, angel of sun is high, but no intensity.

That's just today.  The sun comes out tomorrow and stays for a while with temps warming from the upper 30's tomorrow to the low to mid 70's by the middle of next week.  The sun is pretty strong this time of year in the Southern Plains so it warms us up pretty quick.

This weather is ~10-20 degrees above average for March in my part of the world. We had around 12 inches of snow this year but we average 45-50 inches of snow. I Purple heart climate change!

It got up to 60 degrees one day in January. We've had multiple near 60 degree days in February. If this anomalous pattern continues, the average high temperature in March may very well be in the mid to upper 50s. This is very abnormal in the Inland Northwest: wintry weather tends to stick around until early April due to the influence of the Pacific Ocean. There's a non-negligible chance of accumulating snowfall until early April and there are routine cold snaps that produce towering cumulonimbus clouds that dump "snail" (granular icy snow) even when it's in the mid-40s.

The snow level is at 5000-6000 feet at this point. To put this into reference: it's typical for there to be patchy snow well into May at 3000-4000 feet. This weather is wild.

Snow, sleet, freezing rain combo.

It's a common occurrence from the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia all the way up to the Rust Belt: warm gulf moisture comes over dry arctic air and forms an inversion. This is why freezing rain is a common natural hazard in most of the US. Because of this, weather stations have very specific terminology for "wintry precipitation". There's a Rain/Snow mix, which means sleet, there's a "Wintry Mix", which means freezing rain, granular snow and wet snow, and there's "Freezing Rain".

Wintry mix is nasty.  We got some of that last night.  Dense pea-soup fog starting at about 5pm, with drizzle starting at about 6pm, then little balls of ice about a millimeter in diameter, then bigger pellets.  Luckily that didn't last long.  By around 9pm it was all snow.  When I awoke I learned that (thankfully) all three of us had the day off.  It'll make for an exceptionally busy day tomorrow.  I'll have to go in by 9 and stay till at least 4 to get everything finished, but it is nice to have the day off.  As of about an hour ago we had at least four inches of snow and I shoveled the driveway.  Took about 45 minutes because it was slushy on the bottom from the two hours of "wintry mix" we got last night before the snow.  By the time I got to the bottom of the driveway, the top was already covered again.  We're expecting another four inches so I'll shovel again late this afternoon, but I'd rather deal with four inches twice than eight inches once.

Nice day for a walk, though.  Very little traffic.  I may stroll about after I eat some lunch, which will certainly involve some very warm liquid and copious quantities of gluten and fat.
