IIRC, isn't Verin a character from the Song of Ice & Fire saga?  I wasn't familiar with the series until the TV show came along, but having watched the whole thing, I've still no idea who Verin is.

Or do I have things totally mixed up?

Right genre, wrong series of books.  Verin was from Wheel of Time.
