Oh, great, now we have to hear about how great and formidable Robert Ehrlich is for over a year. This will be Terri Lynn Land redux.

I'm 99.99% sure he won't run for this seat. I've also been told by someone in the know that O'Malley has no interest in the United States Senate. That said, my source was wrong about Mikulski retiring, so who knows at this point.

Chris Van Hollen should get in. His hopes of recapturing house gas go e array, he should run now that Dems gave a clear shot at majority.

Mikulski had a respectable career. I could understand why she might not want to run again in her 80s, especially with the prospect of being in the minority.

O'Malley doesn't have much of a shot of the presidential nomination, so it would make sense for him to run for this office. It would mean his political career doesn't end with his Lieutenant Governor losing to a Republican, and it makes him more appealing as a candidate in later Hillary-less cycles, with executive experience and knowledge of Washington. He'd have a platform as a sitting Senator rather than as a former Governor.

I think O'Malley sees himself more as a President than a Senator. I think he will run for president, and challenge Hillary Clinton anyway, but he will be asked to run for Senate, but he won't do it for his presidential ambitions.

Safe D, especially in Presidential year. To win Republicans need another Charles Mathias, and they don't have anyone like him since long ago..

Good.

Though I respect her, the Democrats need generational turnover to begin rebuilding their bench for Presidential elections after being wiped out in 2010 and 2014.

Same goes with Moonbeam: a younger Democrat governing a state the equivalent of an independent country has a very strong governing argument and experience that would help win an election and govern the country.

Mikulski's not a bad senator, but she's had 5 terms, and it's only right that someone else gets a shot at being Senator.

Maryland's filing deadline is in Late February, so it's conceivable that O'Malley could run for president, do horrible in Iowa, drop out, and file to run for Senate.

Beyond him, there's also the 7 democratic U.S. representatives and Heather Mizeur.

Doug Gansler could also run, but the party might want to reserve him for 2018 Governor.

At the bottom of the list, of course, is Anthony Brown, who lost to Hogan last year, although even Brown should be O.K. here, given that it's a presidential year.

In any case, this is Safe D until republicans show they have another miracle-making candidate.

If he runs, wins the nomination, and loses the general, then he can truly be considered Maryland's own Martha Coakley!

My personal choice would be Donna Edwards, but since the party leadership hates her, it probably won't happen.

If he manages to lose in a presidential year and with Hillary Clinton at the top of the ticket then he will make Coakley look like FDR.
