Lol Democrats already getting cocky? Well, we all know how that worked out for Senator Rick Berg in 2012. ND isn't MD, but still: These open Senate seats should NEVER EVER be taken for granted, no matter how blue/red the state is, especially because the winner might get entrenched.

Well, it's Maryland in a Presidential year...

Also, Edwards and Van Hollen aren't Rick Berg.

Does anyone see a GOP path to victory here? I could see it if they really knock the presidential race out of the park (350 EV or more) and nominate someone relatively inoffensive (I like Chrys Kefalas, a gay Millennial Republican candidate who's been in the race for a while). The Democratic primary looks like it could produce a damaged nominee.

Elijah Cummings's strategy should be simple: run up a huge margin in Baltimore, which he represents in the House, as well as Baltimore County. Hope Edwards and Van Hollen effectively split the rest of the state and thereby hand Cummings the victory.

Doubtful either of these situations could happen, though. I think this is Chris Van Hollen's race to lose.

The Republican Presidential nominee would have to win and win big, the Democratic nominee melts down entirely, and the Republican candidate be, at the minimum, inoffensive, if not an outright star. I'm not sure Chrys Kefalas could pull it off, but he's probably as close as Maryland gets.

This race is safe until proven otherwise. There would need to be a HUGE upset, way bigger than the 2014 governor race.

I dont understand the outrage about some gop guys to try to mull a bid here.
Of course they are highly likely to lose but they won an open gubernational last year.

That would be dumb not to even try.

I would say the same thing about the democrats if they (unlikely though) win LA and KY in 2015 and they dont put a decent candidate in 2016.

This page has mentioned Chrys Kefalis more times than anyone in Maryland besides his immediate family has in a few months.

EMILY'S List already spending quite a bit on Edwards:

On the R side, former Erlich aide Chris Kefalas announced a run yesterday. Its probably of note that he's openly gay and has worked with the Obama DOJ. MD politics isn't my thing, but I guess he's the best general election Republican, given his crossover appeal on social issues:

Van Hollen will likely be elected with 55 percent of the vote.

That's why Van Hollen was recruited, because he is a strong debator, and if it gets tight, he can pull it out. R's wont get closer than 5.

I feel like this race will be a lot closer than most people think... both Kefalas and Szeliga seem to be very strong GOP candidates, but Kefalas even more so.

You are absolutely wrong! In fact, neither of them are strong. There's no desire to elect a Republican senator in Maryland. For Governor, sometimes the racists in BalCo get antsy that Baltimore might prosper, so they elect a Republican to stop that.

The only plausible person that can win, was Steele or Hogan or Ehlrich. Van Hollen has the money to overcome any opponent

She isn't going to win, but she may be able to get within 10 points and trick Democrats into spending some money here.

Democrats aren't going to be spending money in Maryland in a presidential year.

Is there a rating further than Safe D?

Republicans would have to win just about every Senate seat to win the Senate seat in Maryland.

Shouldn't the title of the thread be changed at this point? Kind of obsolete, considering the primary to replace Mikulski has already happened.

The person who created this thread hasn't posted since mid-April.
