Still no clue why the GOP would want this. The Democrats could gerrymander the hell out of Cali and probably control everything in WA, NJ in 2020.

Yeah, this is incredibly stupid of the Republicans.  Not only would the Democrats benefit more from redistricting being toppled, but the argument they're taking to the court could also lead to all of the Republican's precious Voter ID laws being ruled unconstitutional.

Say in 2020, the Ds control the trifecta in CA NJ WA and gain the NY state senate. That's about 8-10 seats in Cali, 4 in New Jersey, 1-2 in Washington that Dems would gain. Add about 5-6 in New York State too. Overall, from four states Ds could easily gain 18-22 seats from those 4 states alone! Subtract two in Arizona but a net of 16-20 puts Democrats back in the game easily. It can be easily done in NJ with a northwest NJ and Monmouth ocean district for the GOP. Putting parts of NYC in Long Island based districts can also end the Republicans on Long Island along with spitting up Staten Island.

Nah, in these types of cases the Roberts Court generally does what's best for the GOP.
