I've made it a few episodes into Season 2 of the show, and can certainly understand the critical and popular acclaim.   however, I can't say I enjoy it: it feels as if at every moment they're on the brink of death.  it's an often unbearable anxiety for  me.  does Walter ever consolidate some power/do things ever "calm down"?

It calms down somewhat by season 3 (though there's still some heavy stuff coming in this season).

But if you think things are tense now, just wait until you get to season 4, and especially season 5.

Not really, no.  Best show I've ever seen.

Hahaha.  Now I'm getting this image of Tweed watching Breaking Bad, and getting all sweaty and nervous and then throwing up at the more climactic scenes.

Pretty much everything about this show is stressful. I guess you're supposed to feel like Walter in that regard. But honestly I was more uncomfortable with his reactions with his wife than with any of the various drug-related bad guys he ever crossed paths with. Simultaneously awkward and devastating.

It lasted 5 seasons. You should know nothing truly bad happens to the protagonist in Season 2

I'm towards the end of Season 3 now.  the show got a lot better from the middle of season 2 on.

my complaint in the OP was poorly worded; my main grievance against the show was that it relied too heavily on suspense rather than character and plot development.  it also took a while for Cranston and Paul to learn their roles and mutual interactions.

This forum's reaction to popular TV shows is reliably hilarious.

I recently binge-watched the show, and I would say Season 3 was the slowest.
