The point of this bill is to make it easier for workers to transform their workplaces into worker-owned and managed cooperatives.

Senator. Do you have just the slightest idea on how much this would cost? Public broadcasting in TV?!

No, just no. Njet. Minime. Nein.

Why should the charters of co-ops be exempt? If an organization is against the public interest why exclude those that are so simply if they are a co-op.

Also, this poses a stability issue for many corporations and may discourage economic activity as a result of such.

I'm not really concerned with how much it would cost. We can always raise taxes on the rich.

If someone starts a business and helps build it up to a value of over $25 million, the thought of losing that business for nothing more than political reasons is ridiculous. If we are going to pursue this measure, I'd like to at least see the panel partly stacked with some of the folks who started or manage the company. The refusal to renew a corporate charter should be exceptionally rare.

Guys, sorry, but we are seriously debating this current version? I am really not one you can call right-wing by the standards of this chamber, but this is ridiculous. This just serves not a single purpose, has no real point to me but to strip those businesses' owners of their work for 25 years, under the vague impression of citizen participation. Not with me.

Well, obviously this bill won't have my support and looks like that attempts to improve won't be enough, so I support a final vote or tabling this.

I'm not sure exactly what current Atlasian corporate law is (compared to American corporate law), but perhaps we could achieve the goals of giving workers a greater say in how their businesses are run and operated by requiring corporate bylaws (corporate charters or articles of incorporation don't really do very much beyond establishing the corporation as an entity; the bylaws are what govern voting processes, etc.) to reserve some amount of shares and/or seats on the board for workers/workers representatives.

I think that would be a better way to achieve the same goals: it would be less disruptive, it would prevent meddling from outside groups that don't necessarily have the best interests of the company and its workers at heart, and it would empower workers, management and trade unions to work together and each have a stake in how the corporation is run.

Forgive me for not getting to this the second that I became Dean of the Senate Roll Eyes

Senators, a vote on a motion to table this bill is now open. Please vote Aye, Nay, or Abstain.
