No different than the worst of the right. Sociopaths who think their right to a political victory is more important than people's right to live.

Silly. I don't get their obsession with killing when a humiliating trial and exile/prison sentence + confiscation of assets works just as well.

everyone is lazy at heart. it is quintessentially human, and the idea that there's anything wrong with that is the first building block of our oppressive society

Right off the bat this topic's title strikes me as loaded - loaded in the same meaning as is meant in the saying 'loaded question'.

Of course it is, the entire point with this thread (as I see it) is to ridicule whiny wannabe radical (violent revolutionary) socialists. We have had several thread where those people support the murder of different people.

Nah, I'd honestly say what is primitive is allowing parasites to suck your blood, poison your rivers and pollute the air you breathe, and sell you defective crap without putting up a fight or giving them exactly what it is they deserve. These people will literally push a country into conflict with another for the purpose of gaining control of markets abroad, killing hundreds of thousands or millions of people, and you're content with allowing this actual barbarism go untouched?

I could replace a few words of your rant (basically replacing bankers with murderers or pedophiles) and it would sound exactly like something you hear on Fox News. Appealing to the lowest instincts of humanity for revenge and blood lust by dehumanizing a category of people (through the use of broad generalizations and overdramatic hyperboles) is definitely deserving of the adjective "primitive".

How am I 'dehumanizing' anyone in the above post? Is there anything that I posted that you object to as untrue? Does not the capitalist class engage in activities which pollute the air and water, result in war with other capitalists (which use us as cannon-fodder), sell defective products, etc? This is the fundamental problem with you trying to equate what I'm saying here with what some nut on Fox News might say about gays or Hispanics or whatever - they cannot be equated. The lunatic ravings on Fox about how immigrants are bringing ebola here or whatever are just that - lunatic ravings. What I'm saying about the capitalists is on the other hand true. They do pollute the air and water in their relentless pursuit of profit. They do cause governments to wage war against one another in the pursuit of profit. They do sell defective products in the pursuit of profit.

Hate does not exist without love, and justice cannot exist without revenge. Both of those things are no more 'primitive' than any other human emotion. I don't reject either because I understand that they have a role to play in society. Can they be abused or distorted? Without a shadow of a doubt. But I don't think either should be categorically ruled 'primitive', because that kind of thinking leads to a society in which justice itself is ruled 'primitive' and offenses against decency (such as, you know, making a profit from killing someone else, polluting the air and water, etc) are given a shrug of the shoulders. That is a primitive society.

TNF, just out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on Neitzsche's writings regarding "slave" and "master" moralities?

As a general rule I'm not partial to Nietzsche, and as far as morality is concerned, I think Trotsky best sums up how I feel on 'moral' questions:

Yes, you are dehumanizing people by conflating them into the single category of "capitalists". This sort of simplification is acceptable when you are reflecting on social problems, but it certainly can't be applied to determine someone's individual responsibility. If a certain individual is guilty of polluting the environment, selling defective products, or actively engineering military conflicts, then he/she must be duly tried and sentenced according to the law. If your grief is with a certain class, then the only civilized remedy is to durably change the structure of society, not to commit mass-murder.

Have you even read my post? That's not what I was disputing. The point of my Fox News analogy was about the defense of death penalty. The kind of defense of death penalty we hear in the media is always the same: "Uhh, look at these bad people! Aren't they bad? Don't they deserve to die? KILL'EM ALL!" Yes, polluting is bad. Raping, torturing and killing a 5-year-old girl also is. But I still believe that the perpetrators of both those crimes have the fundamental right to decide of their life and death. Lock them up for all eternity if you want, that's sufficient.

Emotions exist and have an important part to play in politics, but a statesman interested in building a just society knows that exciting the lowest (and, yes, most primal) emotions when settling important social and political matters always leads to terrible outcomes. Revenge is not justice. Revenge is impulsive, it's the immediate reaction to a stimulus, what our animal instinct tells us to do when we or our loved ones are attacked. Justice requires time and thought, it imposes us to consider all the possible facets of the problem and comes up with a solution that is best for society as a whole. It's hard, and yes, sometimes it's frustrating, but it's the price to pay to avoid blind and ubiquitous violence.

Depends. I've publicly called for George Zimmerman's head on here and I wouldn't mind Daniel Pantaleo getting shot by some loon, but I'm not about this whole kill the rich thing.
