It depends on the circumstances.  Preferably no, but I wouldn't rule out compulsory service in extreme circumstances.

Correct dazzleman - I'm all for individual rights, but the State's first priority will always be its own survival.  If it is truly under threat, everything else is out the window.  However I for one would still run away.

I say no except in time of war (declared by congress). If the nation's survival is at risk you must do whatever it takes to win. I say that with great reservation because I don't trust government at all. They could declare a permanent war on terrorism or Oceana or some other fictitious enemy and put everyone in the service forever. But hopefully we would be smart enough to throw them all out of office at the next election if they did.

Do you guys think 2 years of mandatory service after HS graduation would help to clean up society a little?

(Clean up society is pretty broad... What I mean is, lower crime rates, place added emphasis on personal responsibility, increase moral values, etc...)

I do Nick. There's nothing that most kids my age need more than two years of hard work to mature them and prepare them for whatever follows.

no, it just means we waste money on lots of soldiers who have no intention of staying for any longer than they have to, don't want to be there and kill morale, and I can't imagine just how much I would hate having to be in the military and for that reason alone I oppose as I would never go into it. Yuck.

I sorta' feel the same way.  And for the kids who arent cutout for the military... Set them up with a civilian job (through the military), but only after they complete the mandatory boot camp and training.

Exactly, mainly barely paid slaves is what I'm thinking of for those who can't/don't want to fight. Respect human rights of course.

I'm against compulsory service under all circumstances. It is quite unjust to deprive arbitrarily chosen citizens of their lives, limbs, or liberty, merely to protect the same rights of other people.

No, under all circumstances.  If we need more troops we should do what corporate America does, RAISE PAY!

Being forced to go to war to defend freedom is kind of defeating the purpose. If my way of life truly was being threatened I would fight to protect it - and I'm sure everyone else would do the same. It is not up to the government to tell people to kill themselves for something they don't believe in.

The military draft has been used during war time throughout our history  and we have not succumbed to that yet.

Absolutely not.  Forced service in the military is ridiculous.

Definitely not. Mandating patriotism is counterproductive.
