And ftr, I would have voted for him in the June 2013 spill. But I still despise him, as do a majority of those who voted for him in that said spill (I would imagine).

The funny thing was that on paper he was the perfect leader for the ALP, and I think someone with his background still would be today.

A nerdy Anglican Queenslander who was widely palatable to most of the electorate, and career diplomat who wasn't a union or factional hack.


In addition to his insane behavior in the 2013 campaign and destabilization in the 2010-2013 parliament, any sympathy I would have had for his knifing in 2010 is completely destroyed by the way he removed Kim Beazley. That single action was devastating for the ALP in the long term, removing a very decent man who would have been a fantastic Prime Minister (and probably kept the ALP in office for three terms) from politics.

I think it's more like his body was in the right place (the Labor party caucus rather than the Coalition).  It seemed like that was a sort of important factor in what he did or said.

I do think he had some sort of mental break amidst the stress of handling factions as evidenced by his yelling at random staff members and that video where he has an expletive filled breakdown about his script. ('...this f***ing language!')

Truly a fascinating individual psychologically. Although that is a label I would also use to describe Such charmers as Nixon and Gaddafi, so that's hardly a compliment.
