As far as I'm concerned, the student leadership can do whatever it wants to do.  I just don't get why conservatives get so worked up about some liberal kids just being kids and trying to prove a point.  I wouldn't have voted for this resolution, but I think I'll sleep tonight.

People need to stop obsessing on flags.  It's a flag, you don't need to worship it and conversely, it's not going to beat you up and call you a dirty foreigner.  In summation, it's a flag.

Are they trying to fulfill every negative stereotype conservatives have about liberals?

Well, we are one of the few Western nations that has everyone pledge allegiance to the damn thing every morning, so you have ACTUAL adults with ACTUAL lives get all worked up over these things.  If you read the article, the students don't want any flag of any nation displayed in this space because they do want to espouse any type of nationalism at all.  It's... whatever.

Oh, who cares about the stereotypes conservatives have about liberals?  The type of people who completely worship the flag do so because they are conditioned to and told to.  There, I just stereotyped conservatives.  Do you think they care?

Here's why -at least since the Reagan era, conservatives have succeeded in making the term 'liberal' into an epithet by playing to the many stereotypes engendered since the Vietnam War, to the point that while the general population may be operationally liberal, they shrink from identifying as such.

Actions like this doesn't help.  It is as if liberals are stating that they are too sophisticated to be openly patriotic.  This elitism and snobbery needs to end.

Seriously, this. Nationalism is so overrated. Especially flag worship. It's like porn for some people.

If you asked them, they'd probably say no and give some spiel about American imperialism. Unfortunately, education is a far cry from intelligence.

AS represents the student body of their respective student governments; each UC campus has its own AS corresponding to their campus. However, each AS has varying degrees of power depending on the campus, for example, Davis's AS is an organization runs much of the public transportation system of the city, but the student government itself has limited powers over campus policy.

You know as well as I do that the arguments tend to be a little more sophisticated than that. Wink

It seems to me that as a state institution the power to make decisions about what flags to display rests with the state. The students can petition the state or its agents the trustees of the university, but if the state doesn't want to delegate that decision they can choose to ignore the student's request and require a flag on display.

Butthurt they didn't get into Berkeley

Things aren't going well when the intro quote I use is from Hifly.

I mean I do agree with the reasoning here (nationalism is so overrated), but I get the impression that the AS largely did this to be contrarian in a FUUCK YOU DAD! Sort of Way (like many SJW idiots really).  But, at least they finally did get something done, even if it was an ultimately trivial non-issue (which again is what Internet Social Justice Warriors specialize at).  Whatever ammunition the current generation of tumblr and reddit activists have already given right wing propagandists should be enough to make this look relatively harmless.

I guess I echo Hockeydudes sentiments here, seriously who gives a sheyit?

Hope you're joking, Cath.

That's the point, Antonio.  I posted this story mainly because of the social media blowup it caused.  You would've thought these kids had blown up a house full of puppies.
