I'd argue that the closest "natural" ally of the United States is Great Britain by virtue of our shared history, language and culture, and the fact that we would not exist as a country were it not for Britain.

They did their best to stop you from becoming a country.

I'd say Canada. Our shared interests are probably greater than any other country on Earth, to the point where I could potentially see a merger or at least an EU-style arrangement at some point in the future.

Great Britain and the US have been at odds more than once. Israel has its own existential interests in a very volatile region, so our interests will naturally deviate. Australia is just too remote for our relations to be as important.

I think Canada is really the instantaneous, obvious answer, since other countries are further away and their interests may diverge more. Israel (an important, close ally, but not on Canada's level) just gets a lot of attention because of how frequently it conflicts with its neighbors. I'm a little confused at why everyone is overwhelmingly answering the UK -- doesn't practically every argument in its favor apply even more strongly to Canada?

Likely because the UK has been your most important ally in recent wars. It is also a much stronger power than Canada, so it depends how you define "greatest".

The UK is our parent.  Canada is just our sibling. Tongue

Anyway, I voted UK, though it's worth noting that Australia is the only one that fought alongside the US in every major 20th-century war.  Even the British stayed out of Vietnam.

Doesn't the term greatest imply something more than closest?

Canada, obviously.  We may not be the most important ally, but the Canada-US relationship rivals no other partnership in the world.

And clearly we have no problem being taken for granted Tongue

You can't be listed as our greatest ally because you're taken for granted.

Why? I'd argue that being taken for granted in many respects is a result of being America's greatest ally.

Britain is the majority view - with Russia as greatest threat.

You're so taken for granted, you don't get to be listed as our greatest ally. Instead we have to list some other country. How about Niue?

It seems most countries perceive greatest ally as most important/strongest ally:

Why do the Thai see Cambodia as a threat? Is this related to some Khmer Rouge legacy?

It's only an 11% plurality, and they don't have any serious enemies right now, but some Thais think Angkor Wat should be theirs.
