On the bright side, the international coalition is moving quickly against them.

Maybe too quickly. It might mean Johnathan will be re-elected.

Symbolically, it's bad. I doubt it will have that much effect on the ground.

I'm a tad surprised IS would even accept them, given the racial issues at play.

Sounds like a recruitment ploy.

Is is so much more respectable than Boko Haram. At least your average IS member knows how to read.

Boko Haram are just a bunch of inferior degenerates who should be liquidated to the last person.

I have the impression that Boko Haram is an insurgency parochial to Nigeria. Unlike al-Shabaab in Somalia, BH has no real affiliation with any movement or organization outside of the country. Granted, many of the recruits come from immediately bordering countries like Cameroon, but that tends to be the case in many African conflicts.

BH has survived this long because of tacit political support from northern politicians and info leaked from Nigerian security officers sympathetic to it. Reorganize the Nigerian Army and the state police forces and BH vanishes for good.

To comment directly on the article: I think it's just a stunt.

Yeah basically everyone wants in on ISIS's notoriety. They are the cool kids with the social media and the international condemnation and foreign recruits with cool nicknames coming out of the wazoo; as I recall several Islamist groups in the Caucasus and SE Asia have played the Isis card to reclaim relevance.
