Apparently he's been hospitalized and in critical condition for the past few days. Rumors on social media that he passed away.

Link.

A couple of articles from last year regarding potential successors to Khamenei:

Quick, time for Netanyahu to come up with new lies.

Any chance his successor might be a bit less conservative?

Insha'Allah, it will be Rafsanjani.

From what I can see he's the most "moderate" relative to the other potential successors. However, he's 80 (older than Khamenei), so I can see a series of increasingly old and frail Supreme Leaders who lead for a little bit and then die (kinda like the USSR, maybe?), before they run out of Old Guard folks and have to hand it over to a new generation.

Whether the "new generation" is more hardline or moderate, who knows.

Well, let's be blunt about this. None of them are moderate.

No chance. Rafsanjani has been systematically emasculated politically since 2005, including being denied the right to run in the 2013 Presidential elections by the Council of Guardians due to his age.

This choice is going to come down to a fight between the inner circle around Khamenei centered around his son Hassan, who would like to succeed but probably can't, his allies the Larijiani brothers(the Speaker of Parliament and head of the Judiciary), and an alliance of everyone else ranging from Reformists to Ahmadinejad supporters who want to break the power of the camarilla that has been running the Faqih's office for the past few years.

Given that moderates have been prevented from even running for the Assembly of Experts in recent years, the odds of one being selected by that assembly are almost nil. That said, an anti-Khamenei conservative such as Ayatollah Sharoudi, the former head of the judiciary, would likely install someone interested in a more pluralistic political system which would mean curtailing the power of the Council of Guardians and its hardline leader Ahmad Jannati.

He'll do his utmost to live long enough to see the nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran through to the end.  He wants a legacy before he dies -and I am going out on a limb to predict he will want to see the beginnings of a reconciliation between our two countries, starting with this deal.

Reminds me of BFMTV...

1st NEWS CHANNEL OF FRAAANCE

...in 2011 iirc, which during about maybe a little hour was announcing him dead too and began all a blhablahblha about that, I was like 'wtf??'...no other comments about that anywhere else, and then...

'oh sorry, we messed up, so what gonna be the weather tomorrow...'

Given all of Netanyahu's saber-rattling, they'll probably double down and pick the furthest right person they can just to troll the hell out of the West.

It'd troll Netanyahu more to pick a moderate.
