Mother
chemical technician (late 70s - early 80s)
middle-management saleswoman (mid 80s - early 90s)
service worker (early 90s - early 00s)
saleswoman (2001 - 2015)

Father
carpenter (late 70s - 2015)

The trajectory of my two family trees is pretty interesting. My family in the US went from being blue collar (father's generation) to being white collar (my generation). My family in Mexico went from dire poverty (grandfather's generation) to being teachers and nurses (mom's generation) to being bohemians, intellectuals, doctors and mid-management (my generation). I'd say that my Mom has been a much bigger influence on me than my Dad. It's not really a coincidence that my cousins in Mexico tend to share both my temperament and my interest in books, music etc.

I'm really proud of my family on el otro lado. Smiley

My dad was an oil company owner until I was 6/7, he then studied to become a nurse when I was 9/10, been one ever since, works at a psychiatric hospital. My mom was a hair stylist until my sister was 10 or so, she then became a secretary until the great recession, and after that she became a realtor.

Mom has been a secretary for a little over 20 years at 2 different jobs. She was fired from the first job after she got pregnant with my sister. My dad has done the same main job for about 25 years, and he's had numerous other jobs in between then and now.

My dad was a blue-collar worker for all his life until he retired.

My mum worked in the tourism area in her first years until she got my oldest brother and then was a housewife.

Mum:Classical musician (violin).

Dad: Classical musician (Oboe)

Both practically free-lancers, although with one symphony for 40 years...but Oakland has jack crap for a musical program.

Ma's virtually retired, but still has some students.

Dad's got a decent gig at Stanford, and still fairly active.

My mom worked at a TV station when she was in her twenties. She worked as a copy writer and in PR for a few years. When I was born (the third kid) she decided to stay at home and raise us. When I was a junior in high school she became a substitute teacher for a while. Now she works at a Hallmark Store and writes romance novels.

My dad started out as a KFC fried chicken worker. He has grease scars that are scary to look at. He graduated from the University of Dubuque and got a job running time sheets at a factory in Burlington, Iowa. In his mid-twenties he was hired as an insurance agent by Farm Bureau. He worked for them until the mid-nineties when he went to work for another insurance company. He owned his own insurance agency for a few years and then he decided insurance was boring and got a new job as a traveling salesman. Currently my dad is working as a mega-church financial adviser in Texas. He makes good money and my mom likes that it is warm in Texas.

My mother was a trophy wife. My Dad was an executive at a record company in Los Angeles during that portion of his career when I was alive (my Dad sired me at 45, and he had a most fascinating - almost novelistic - career prior to me arrival on this planet).

My father is a physicist.

My mother has been a stay-at-home-mom since we moved to Tennessee, but before that she worked a variety of jobs, mostly retail.  She's also a quilter, but as you may expect, that doesn't generate very much income.

My parents were both children of immigrants, both born and raised on North Dakota farms.  When she moved to the "city" in the mid-'50's, my mother became a cook and baker at different restaurants on and off till her retirement.  My dad, after leaving the farm to serve in WWII, became a master electrician, opened his own electrical company with a brother-in-law and wired half the buildings in the town where I was born before he retired.  My parents, during their retirement, tried to manage a couple of restaurants and lost almost all their life savings in the process.  During their marriage, they also raised seven boys.

How did she get from law to teaching history? Through a PhD or some shortcut?
