If in a pew, showing up in torn jeans if just ducky. If invited to hold forth at the podium, seeking their rapt attention, doing it in torn jeans, particularly if it "under-dresses" the congregation, is a sign of disrespect. Call me old fashioned.  Maybe it is in the gay in me, but sartorial presentation matters.

There are no pews in this church.

Hahahaha. Not a problem believe me.

I don't go to church so it's an immaterial question.

I doubt at brtd's church that that's under-dressing the audience. I wouldn't be surprised if people there made it a point to be as casual as possible to undermine the idea that God expects you to wear your "best" clothes, which is something I've always agreed with. Respect for your God, your pastor, your congregation, that's something proven with actions that reflect your faith, not the objects you literally use to hide yourself from the outside.

In conclusion, BRTD ought to start a nudist church.

Wouldn't care one bit.

So we have yet another "tell me... which is cooler? Something I like or some hyperbolic version of something else?" poll.

I don't think that's actually true (the first part at least), it's more like "this is how I normally dress, and there's no reason to dress any differently to church" plus the fact that many are going to coffee shops and bars before and after church too. And you don't dress any differently for church than you do for those things.

But the second sentence, yeah no one would disagree.

Being used to ministers looking like this:

I would be rather surprised if a preacher wore pre-torn jeans in church and I doubt I would be able to take her/him seriously.

They're Northern European Lutherans. But then again it is a woman.

It is a ruff.

No difference. Ruffs were always a gender (and age) neutral attire.

I've never sseen an American Lutheran minister wear one of those and kind of assumed they went extinct in the 18th century. I have seen Lutheran ministers at church in jeans though (not torn granted). In North Dakota too.

Somehow I highly doubt that, at least in practice...

Used by children as well back when they were fashionable.

Sure, but the people who were children when it was fashionable are probably either dead or very old today. Tongue

They where used by Danish and Norwegian ministers in America back when they had their own churches, but The Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America joined the Lutheran Church in America in 1962 (already renamed AELC in 1954). The old style clothing did not survive the merger. Not sure about the Norwegians. I guess it is a similar story.

The Church of Norway abolished ruffs in 1980, so only a few conservative ministers still wear them in Norway.

Everyone knows that a real church service in The One True Church centers around absolute boredom, and thus cannot involve sexual stimualtion.

This.

I have no problem if people, including the pastor, wear jeans to church. Non-baggy, non-athletic shorts won't turn me off as long as you aren't on stage. But when it comes to torn jeans, evidently stained clothing, or clear evidence that you don't care about basic hygiene, that's where I draw the line and call it blatant disrespect for god and the conregation,  especially if you're on stage.
