I don't really know what more to say about it right now on top of what the bill says...

I'm a bit wary of passing minimum wage legislation since the Senate seems to change every month. However, I do think this bill could use some changes. First, the minimum wage set for 16 year olds is lower than the IRL minimum in some Northeastern states, so I think we could increase to $10.50 or something like that, if we're allowed to. Second, remembering the issues of the Haverford Act, are we allowed to have different minimums for 16 year olds, considering 16 is apparently the age of the majority in Atlasia?

Yeah I don't see an issue having a difference at 16. We seem to have the authority to do so.

With the Senate this shows why we need to have our own regional minimum wage, because we can't wait for the Senate to pass something-and in the end it may be a watered down bill. Let's get something through here, and if the senate increase it then that's how the world rolls.

But yeah, apart from increasing the minimum wage for 16-17 to $10 I support this bill fully

Well given that we've basically made 16 year olds adults in our region (i.e. pornography, age of concent, drinking age, drug use, tobacco consumption) I wouldn't be able to support a measure with unequal wages, with all due respect.

What's the school leaving age? I assumed that there was schooling all the way to 18

I'd assume that's 16 as well. Federal supremacy and all.

Wonderful, just what we need.  Thousands of "adults" leaving school a age 16, because they reached the legal age of becoming an "adult", and can therefore decide to leave school on their own, without permission from parents.

These "adults" are now doomed to a life of minimum wage, menial jobs, because as "adults" they have left high school, therefore they have a low level of education, they do not qualify for post secondary academic education,  and will wallow the rest of their lives in these low paying jobs, with a bleak outlook for the future, because the government, in its' wisdom, has decided to declare 16 year olds "adults".

Now, as far as minimum wage legislation is concerned, with recommendations of 15/hr and 7.50/hr, proposed amendment of 15/hr and 12.50/hr, can someone inform this Assembly what the current minimums are that we are comparing these to?

It looks like the current federal minimum wage is $12.50/hr, but it's probably changed because of inflation. The current Senate bill estimated it'd be $14/hr now.

While setting minimum wages is necessary in order to ensure workers are not being taken advantage of by employers, something we must keep in mind is to not set minimum wages so high as to have the effect that our businesses in the Northeast become uncompetitive in the market place.

Payroll is the most significant expense of any business, so while minimum wages must be fair, they must also not be excessive.

We need balance, but I think business has a tendency to act like an increase is going to destroy the entire private sector. In many cases this is simply not true, even with small businesses

Well considering this is also pretty much the case in the United States IRL...

Would you be happy with $15 for 16 up, then - or should the minimum be lower?

How about 13.00/hour  minimum wage for everyone, regardless of age?

I'll move to the centre ground of $14 to try and reach a consensus on this. Smiley

As a consensus $14.00.  I can support that to get a consensus.

Considering the way the federal minimum is set up, I'd be surprised if it's not $14.00 already.

Are you able to confirm if the federal minimum increases with inflation or whether it's fixed?

According to the Living Wage Act, the minimum wage was set to $12.50 as of 2014. (http://goo.gl/n4spmf)

The Reasonable Minimum Wage Act, the minimum wage is indexed to inflation. (http://goo.gl/ufgfCx)

Considering the Senate seemingly passes minimum wage legislation every two months, these laws might be outdated now, but I think that that those two facets probably still stand.

In regards to the bill, it seems limited to have it at $14 if that's the federal level. We need a $15 minimum to give working families a chance to prosper in the Northeast. A higher, fairer minimum wage will give the the region a much needed boost

If we want to increase it to $15, we should wait until the Senate finishes with their current minimum wage bill. If it gets adopted, which seems likely, our bill will quickly become redundant.
