I don't think that's the issue. Someone as liberal as him could win, O'Malley's problem is the same as Adlai Stevenson, Al Gore and John Kerry...he's too dull and eggheaded. Wish we had a better alternative to Hillary.
One of those won, and the only one who lost badly was running against the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe from WWII.
