Would have been an interesting matchup and was actually my prediction before Schweitzer's epic fail interview. Basically Libertarian vs populist.

Brian Schweitzer-360
Rand Paul-178

Social conservatives just don't get very excited by Paul.

Why did I believe I might be wrong in the type of map a Democrat might construct. But I can see where you are going with that and Rand Paul's has pluses, but Schweitzer?  Please!

I do think that some sort of third party ticket (maybe led by someone like Graham) would form in response to two dovish candidates.

Rand Paul is a libertarian on economics but an authoritarian right-winger on about everything else. He's not the regionally-transcending conservative to break The Blue (Atlas Red) firewall. He loses every state that Dubya ever lost, Nevada, Arizona and Florida (talk about privatizing Social Security and the elderly will vote against you), Virginia (government employees), and Ohio.

He could win Arizona while losing Colorado (which has a loud and large libertarian following).

This idea of "libertarian" states is misleading.

Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming... the GOP has an authoritarian fundamentalist wing and a libertarian wing in Colorado. Nevada outside of Greater Las Vegas and Reno-Sparks-Carson City, but that is not enough to swing Nevada.

The GOP continues to face a Blue (Atlas Red) Firewall hostile to its main constituencies. The Republicans need utter failure of the Democrats in economics or foreign policy; the Republicans are much more likely to have that happen to them because they are much more reckless.

Has it gotten this bad that intellectuals must spit lies about Randal?

His staffers beat a heckler a few days before the 2010 election. Such is authoritarian in itself.
