Although I find it amusing Forum Lefties have a higher view of Julius Caesar than FDR.

Makes sense. You got Italian roots and not a drop of Gaul blood.

How is he viewed in France today?

I tend not to much care for people who subjugate vast stretches of territory, slaughtering the inhabitants and selling many, many others into slavery as an opportunity to redistribute the land to his followers. I find it hard to understand a perspective that condemns Andrew Jackson and celebrates Gaius Julius Caesar.

Given the number of people butchered and enslaved, his actions in Gaul outweigh any possible good he did in Rome.

EDIT: Put me down as a vote for Vercingetorix, an actual, literal Freedom Fighter.

I actually have been pretty consistent in regarding Jackson and the Jacksonians as the lesser evil in the early republic, for what its worth.

Not too bad, surprisingly. Mostly just as an apt military commander prevailed despite Vercingetorix despite the latter's best efforts. There isn't really much resentment over Rome for the conquest, probably because nobody can deny that Gaul prospered under the Pax Romana.

He's the antagonist in the Asterix comics, but even then he's only portrayed as laughably cocky and egotistical rather than a genuine bad guy.
