Libya will sign Chemical weapons convention - tv commentators calling this the "Saddam effect" - meaning that the Bush/Blair courageous strategy is working!!!  Anyone want to send Howard Dean some extra pants... he probably just soiled the ones he is wearing.

BREAKING NEWS
MSNBC News Services
Updated: 5:33 p.m. ET Dec. 19, 2003
This is a developing story and will be updatedLONDON - Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has confirmed his country has sought in the past to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities but plans to dismantle all such programs immediately, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Friday.

Blair said Britain and the United States had been engaged in talks with Libya for nine months.

"Libya came to us in march following successful negotiations on Lockerbie to see if it could resolve its weapons of mass destruction issue in a similarly cooperative manner," the prime minister said in the northern English city of Durham.

"Libya has now declared its intent to dismantle its weapons of mass destruction completely and to limit the range of Libyan missiles to no greater than 300 kilometers."

The actions entitle Libya to “rejoin the international community,” Blair said.

Blair said Gadhafi had promised that the process would be "transparent and verifiable."

The U.N. Security Council ended U.N. sanctions against Libya Sept. 12 after Gadhafi's government took responsibility for the bombing of a Pan Am passenger jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, and agreed to pay families of the 270 victims $2.7 billion. The council's decision was largely symbolic, since the United Nations had temporarily suspended its embargo in April 1999.

But the United States has kept its own 17-year embargo in place. Washington has said Libya is actively developing biological and chemical weapons, upgrading its nuclear capabilities and seeking ballistic missiles to deliver weapons of mass destruction, for which it is receiving help from countries that sponsor terrorism.

"This decision by Col. Gadhafi is a historic one and a courageous one and I applaud it," said Blair.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

What erks me is that there's a little harmless Island not far from the Florida Coast that's had embargos against it since the Kennedy Administration. We should consider lifting all the Embargos against that little Island, even if Castro is still in power. If we are going to lift embargos against Lybia, when Quadafi is stll its leader, we are long overdue to do the same for Cuba. Any comments?

Don't make me take back that nice thing I said about you Smiley

Of course unilateral embargos do not work all that well.  But they do make a point and are morally worthwhile.  At least we are standing up for freedom, liberty, and justice.

You wouln't have to fear. "There's nothing to Fear, but Fear Itself," remember who said that my fellow DEM? Anyway, if anything like that happened, Embargos would start up again, there would be a 'CONDITIONAL' LIFT on all Embargos. Don't live in Fear.

As this is a spin-off from the Lockabie stuff, I can't see how Bush can be credited for this.

I agree with Realpolitik. With all due respect, this wouldn't have happened without Britain's diplomatic initiative.

But either way, it's great news. How nice to open up a newspaper and not be confronted with death and carnage for a change.

LOL i remember that.  Kramer burned Susan's father's cabin with the cubans he gave him, and then wanted George to get him more because he couldn't play golf anymore.  George wouldn't do it, so Kramer went to the Cuban embassy and traded his jacket for the cigars....
I have every Seinfeld ephisode recorded in my mind.  Get me going, I can tell you the plot line of any ephisode.

Mr. Fresh, you say you're an Expert on Seinfeld. Well, what episode had the word NAZI in its title? Chris
By the way, that's my favorite episode of all time!

Obviously the one with the Soup Nazi!  And I believe it aired on the latter part of Seinfeld's reign...i'm guessing 7th or 8th season.

I had to close my shop and move to Argentina!

Seriously, the spin seems to have been, "How dare you betray the victims of Lockerbie by letting Gadhafi junk his WMD programs and not invading Libya!" The liberal media hasn't been this hawkish since they wanted us to invade North Korea last October (remember that, boys and girls?)

I support lifting the embargo, but this is a very sensitive issue for millions of Cuban-Americans. There are single-issue voters whose main issue is the Cuban situation, and almost none of them support lifting the embargo. They're all against it. Luckily, most of the Dem candidates for president don't support lifting the embargo, so this will be a dead issue in 2004, for all intents and purposes.

I agree that the Cuban embargo should be lifted. It is only hurting both countries and it isn't going to make Cuba become a democracy any sooner. Cuba will probably become a democracy when Castro dies, either way. Yes, such a stance would piss off the Cuban vote in South Florida, but I think that overall it would be more beneficial than harmful for a candidate to take this stance if it was well explained. It just makes logical sense when you sit down and think about it.

Wow, Mr. Fresh, we actually have a lot in common, since we both love Lord of the Rings and Seinfeld! See, liberals and conservatives aren't THAT different after all. Smiley
