...large families of fanatical white Christians who are seeking asylum in the United States from the horrible oppression of not being able to home school their children in their home country!

They're not 'fanatical', I've read about this family before and they deserve every right to home school their children. I support the bill. It says something when the law banning homeschooling was passed under Adolph Hitler.

But of course, the GOP is being widely contradictory here.

Maybe they should just grant asylum to all the anti-Maduro people in Venezuela. That'll provide a nice base of economically conservative Hispanics now that the first-generation Cubans are dying off.

The same could be said by opponents of Interstate Highways. I mean c'mon.

How is it fanatical to want to teach your kids at home?
I am all for the family being able to stay here. If someone wants to homeschool their kids, they should be able to.

Because no one is qualified to teach 13 years worth of school, especially all the different subjects of high school?

Hitler loved animals.  He also loved 'proper educations'

My gut and heart say there is nothing wrong with homeschooling...but it needs to be set up in a better way to ensure students have time with licensed teachers...which ccan be done online.

I see nothing wrong with home-schooling (I was homeschooled for most of a year in 7th grade), if and only if the parents aren't insane or doing it for insane reasons.

If they can give a quality education (and I've noticed a lot of news articles popping up for how unprepared and brainwashed lots of homeschooled kids end up being), then home-schooling is okay. If they're just an excuse to brainwash kids, then no, not okay.

From what I understand, they seek asylum based on freedom of religion and conscience. They aren't illegal.

Okay, whatever, I disagree with this strongly, but the point is, even if you think home schooling should be legal, people should not be granted asylum because they can't home school their children in their home country.

I don't understand homeschool parents.

"I don't trust those fancy-pants teachers with their masters degrees and such to watch my kids while I earn an income.  Imma quit my job and teach my own kids.  I'm pretty smart, how hard can it be?"

To say nothing of the creepy religious ones like this German family who think they're being persecuted.

The US is free to keep them, but I support keeping the ban on homeschooling. It's not really a political issue here.

Homeschooling strikes me as a generally bad idea but the people who oppose it often seem weirdly pearl-clutchy about it considering that they tend to strenuously oppose pearl-clutching in other areas of life.

As someone who was personally homeschooled 1st-8th grade I can tell you that the curriculum in my case was extremely religious, evolution was protrayed as a "myth", all the language arts assignments had to do with Quotes from the Bible or were talking about religion. When I entered a private high school Freshamn year I found myself extremely lost in Scrience, LA, and Math. If homeschool is going to be legal in America as it currently is there has to be some state regulations on it. This family just needs to suck it up and put their children in regular school as they will probably get a much, much better education there free of religious propaganda.

The problem is that home-schooling is often in practice nothing more than extension of complete parental control, even if entirely unintentional, which if you are an advocate of specific Rights of the Child, is uncomfortable. If the motivation is to essentially monitor and control a child's access to information, even if you have the best intention (say the child has serious educational or learning difficulties), that infringes upon children's rights. Children deserve to have an advocate for them, who isn't their legal parent or guardian. That has historically been provided by teachers, tutors (even home tutors) or through apprenticeships.

The only solution is to make homeschooling illegal here as well. Wink
