I like how a lot of people regard an intelligent and/or non-tedious leftist as some sort of alarming and freakish anamoly.

I don't know how offensive the word is, but it does sound rather immature.

That said, the word itself may be unavoidably semantically drifting into an insult as so many other medical diagnosis (idiot, moron, maniac, psycho, imbecile, cretin, dolt etc). There's a reason the psychiatric world have quietly dropped 'mentally retarded' in favour of 'intellectually disabled'.
