lol. Classic. Wink

I just can't stand that much winter. No way.

Tennessee.

Culturally, Tennessee only differs a little from Pennsylvania, so I could adjust to it much more quickly.

I'd choose Norway of course.

Tennessee, but only because I would kill myself under Norway's weather conditions.

Norway's coast averages above freezing in winter.

You're saying that as if that was enough to make it tolerable.

It's not tolerable.  It's enjoyable.

You are not human.

I spent a good chunk of the winter with temperatures between -10 and -25 C. It snowed 50cm yesterday.

2 C is bloody tropical to me right now.

I'd immediately say Norway... but at the same time I would've never guessed I would've been so endeared with New Orleans and the majority of the region when I visited there a few years back.  Who knows?  Maybe I would love Nashville or something...

...Nah.  Nawlins has that whole jazz and French cultural thing going on.  Tennessee strikes me as a bunch of rednecks who are proud of being a bunch of rednecks and vacation to Branson and [Inks].

Yeah, 32 degrees is not bad at all. You just put on a heavy jacket and a hat and you're fine. When it gets into the low 20s and teens is when it starts to suck.

Certainly Tennessee. Even leaving aside concerns of weather and culture (both of which would be strong points in Tennessee's favor), as someone who is not white and belongs to a minority religion I would feel much more comfortable in Tennessee than in Norway.

Why would Tennessee be better for someone who belongs to a minority religion?  TN is heavily conservative Christian, while Norwegians are not very religious.

Because American culture is significantly more tolerant of religious diversity than Scandinavian culture.

I think the coldest temperature I've seen while in Florida was -1C? So for someone who's more accumulated to temperatures that are closer to 32C, it'd be difficult. Tongue

I'd find it easier to deal with 32C than 0C. It doesn't get below 10C here generally.

That said, Norway > Tennessee.

Coming from northern MN, which with the exception of rural eastern North Dakota, Is as close to Scandinavia as it gets in the US I can tell you many would struggle much more to get along in Norway than in Tennessee.

You would NEVER be fully accepted in Norway.  You are once and forever an outsider.

Many codes of conduct in different cultures are established as unspoken rules.  Scandinavians, however, are masters of the unspoken rule and you just plowed haphazardly through ten of them which is why all of the sudden they seem standoffish and cold.  Insular cultures are always like this.  Japan is an extreme example.

In other words...a black lesbian communist will be accepted in TN before even a Minnesotan with Norwegian cousins would be accepted in Norway.

Keep that in mind.

On the other hand a black lesbian communist would be much better received and experience less discrimination in Norway than in Tennessee.

The point is: xenophobia is bad.  And the Norweegies can hate me all they want, I would still get to have all that sweet, sweet socialism amirite?  I would hate to be a poor in TN, however.

Tennessee, mainly because of the weather, though the barbecue is a strong point in it's favor also.

Considering I've lived in America my entire life and had a great time in Nashville last fall, I'll take Tennessee in a heartbeat ... sure, I'll have some cultural differences, but I'm not going to move to ing Norway to make that point, LOL.

No it isn't. Especially not compared to mainstream Southern culture.

Where do you have all your prejudices about Scandinavian culture?

(and there isn't really one Scandinavian culture)

Well, you made her a triple minority:

1) Norway is significantly less homophobic than the US South.

2) Being a Communist is a lot less of a marginal or weird position in Norway. Whereas plenty of people in Tennessee would view any Communist as un-American.

3) There are black people even in small towns in northern Norway and quite a lot of them in the big cities. Being an Afro-Norwegian would not make you an oddity. There is a lot less structural racism in Norway than in the US (again, this would apply even more so when comparing with the South) and Norwegian police would be much less likely to target black people and harass them.

Oslo County has the highest Afro-Norwegian share with 5,3%, whereas provincial Norway has 1-2%. Even Møre and Romsdal county in Western Norway, which has the lowest share, has 1%. So you would be part of a small minority, but not an unheard of oddity.

I have lived in Nashville TN, so it depends on where you live in Tennessee. Personally Tennessee is one of the most beautiful states I have ever been to (Alaska is quite nice). Politically, most Urban areas on TN are much closer to the left spectrum, while the more rural are righter.
