Wouldn't a suicide be fairly obvious (knocked over chair, etc)? This is not like that case in Georgia where the person was hanging at the playground (which easily could have been a suicide). None the less, I was wrong to jump to conclusions so rapidly.

Lets not assume things. If its an actual homicide, then whoever did it needs to rot in prison for the rest of their life. If its a suicide, its just a bad tragedy that looks eerie due to racist history.

Not necessarily.  The man had been missing for over two weeks.  Evidence decays over time.  He also had a criminal record, including a murder or manslaughter conviction, so he may have had some natural enemies.  Who knows?  At this point, it's too early to jump to conclusions.

There are more suicides than homicides per year.  With something like a hanging death, that's more likely to be a suicide unless you have signs of a struggle or another cause of death.  That's the key piece of evidence, if he was shot or stabbed, it's not a suicide.  If he died from strangling, it's probably a suicide.

But Black people in Mississippi are also perfectly aware of what a particular form of suicide looks like, and the implications of such an act. The fact that it wasn't in his house (where many people commit suicide), the fact that it clearly wasn't a spur of the moment thing, all of that points to the possibility (not certainty, but definitely an obvious possibility) of a lynching.
