I'm very curious. I'm going to say the Democratic Party (mainly due to the progressive wing which insults libertarians any chance they get), but its close.

The Republican Party, or else I wouldn't be in it.

Democrats are only a threat to the laissez-faire ideals of Libertarianism. Republicans generally threaten every thing else.

Libertarians also tend to be pro-gun and against affirmative action, but other than that, I agree with you.

The Democrats, if I had to choose just one, but a better answer would be that both major parties are responsible for the ongoing marginalization of minor parties and for making it quite difficult for them to gain a foothold in legislative bodies.

This is rather unsurprising because while the Democrats agree with libertarian views on many social issues, they tend to do so for broadly different reasons. For that reason, it is rather mistaken to suggest that the Democrats are amenable to the ideas and goals of libertarianism on these issues. They may be less of a threat than Republicans, but only accidentally.

Democrats. Other than just moderating libertarian positions, Republicans usually only oppose libertarians on mundane social issues like abortion, gays, gambling, and drugs. Democrats differ on both economic (taxes/role of government/subsidies) and social issues (guns/ free speech/ religious practice/racist quotas/Delicious food/ soda sizes/cigarettes)

Indeed.  Easily the Dems.

(and I agree with the posters suggesting that the Libertarians themselves and their quest for purity is a big stumbling block too)

Yes, noted Democrat Michael Bloomberg with his soda size laws.

Crony capitalism ensures that most people have no freedom to compete -- only to work or starve. A war-driven economy is inevitably regimented as badly as the armed forces.

Neither big party is libertarian.

Yes, the libertarian party sucks. However, can we stick to the topic?

Probably the Democrats, because there isn't really a Libertarian (or even pseudo Libertarian) wing like the Republicans have.

Republicans would likely accept a libertarian sect much more readily than Democrats would.

I know most militant libertarians are quite proud to be in neither party, but the answer - when you look at what both parties actually want - is clearly the Democrats.  Yes, there are some fundamentalists and interventionists in the GOP; so what?  1) They're becoming less and less prominent in the party, and 2) I think they all at least kind of know they'll never get all that SoCon stuff they want (i.e., they'll eventually just be falling right in line with most other libertarian goals).

Democrats. Their worldview is antithetical to libertarianism.

As most of the big social issues fade into history (seriously, gay rights in 20 years will be as dead as segregation), the Republican platform will be more and more defined by small government, deregulation, and gun rights.

The way this question is phrased is odd, considering how rare libertarians are outside of the Internet.

There's always new social issues. How many people supported homosexual marriage in 1960?

The idea that the GOP should rely entirely on being economically right-wing and jettison all affections for traditionalism and religion is suicidal.

But not an outlandish idea, given this forum...
