Eh, he may just want attention. A launch of a presidential run earlier than anybody else from him would be hilarious though.

I think that thus is where it begins.

This would actually be normal most election cycles. For some reason this cycle everybody is announcing late.

Most people want to wait until April 1st due to it being the start of the fundraising quarter. Why that wasn't the case in past election cycles, I'm not sure.

I'm glad this election started later. 2008 was way too early.

I would've thought he'd announce in Texas, but the school is called "Liberty" University so it seems somewhat fitting.

I imagine Cruz will probably announce an exploratory committee.  Although, as IceSpear pointed out, why wouldn't he wait just 9 days and he can avoid the first quarter reporting?

I wouldn't underestimate Ted Cruz in the primary. He knows how to twist words on attack and make even someone like Walker suddenly 'too liberal.'

The first Republican presidential candidate?  Does that mean that Mark Everson doesn't count?

Being that he is a bit of an underdog, it makes sense for him to go early.

Cruz has spent his time in the Senate making himself the most anti-establishment and most conservative and biggest critic of Obama. I bet he is surprised that Walker is kicking his butt in the polls. Maybe conservative GOP primary voters are more pragmatic than their reputation. Walker may not be the ultra-conservative but he seems more electible.

Of course, Cruz's chances at the nomination are pathetic (the latest poll out of TX shows him leading by just 1 point in the primary) but he wants it really bad.

Cruz is the only GOP candidate I see that can win the nomination but lose to Elizabeth Warren. So all you true libs should root for him

Also, at best he'll be 2016's Santorum, but I doubt that will be the case because it will probably be Bush against another semi-establishment figure (maybe Walker).

No, he'll probably be 2012's Bachmann.

I think you guys are seriously underestimating Cruz. Of all the candidates with a chance, save maybe Paul, he has the most devoted supporters.

I don't really see any evidence of this.  Paul is at least selling something vaguely unique on certain issues.  Cruz's agenda is right in line with several other candidates…including Carson, who consistently polls better than Cruz in the primary polls these days.

LOLOLOLOL

Obama, who had no primary challenger waiting in the wings, announced his reelection run in April 2011. Every 2012 candidate, yes, even Rick Perry, announced before October of the year before the election. So did every 2008 candidate, yes, even Fred Thompson.

So, by this, you're saying that some obscure third partier should win. LOLOLOLOL.

He probably won't get the nomination, but yeah he should have some consistent support levels. Maybe 2008 Huckabee would be a good comparison.

That would mean Cruz winning the Iowa caucus, which would be a terrible event in the history of this nation.

Iowa, at least on the Republican side, has generally been won by terrible people. Ted Cruz would actually be a huge step up.
