Until the city of York, the island of Jersey and the country of Mexico somehow get wiped off the map.

I think Vox Populi might be suggesting that those places should be renamed Ancient City of York, Venerable Island of Jersey and Old Dirty Mexico.

The English city of Newcastle upon Tyne is named after a castle built in 1080.

I don't think the "New" in these state names is going anywhere anytime soon.

The oldest coty in Russia is called Novgorod. Which, of course, means Newtown.

If the city is called New York, then the state should be called New Yorkshire. New York (state) resembles Yorkshire much more than it does York, and it would clear up some of the confusion resulting from the city and state having the same name anyway.

How about James City, Gardenia, and Rio Grande?
