Would probably be a swing state. Be interesting to try breaking that down politically.

Eh, it leans Democrat most of the time. What I find hilarious is that even if you take all of Obama's votes out of New York City and leave Romney's in, Obama would still win the state!

Obama: 2,490,636 (53.9%)
Romney: 2,053,607 (44.4%)

But if the Democrat sucks, like Andrew Cuomo, a Republican can win...

Astorino: 1,359,429 (48.5%)
Cuomo: 1,286,569 (45.9%)

Turnout in NYC 2014 was really, really bad.

Excluding the 5 boroughs only, or the suburbs of NYC as well?

I played around with this idea in the past. Without upstate, New York would be one of the safest Democratic states (on par with Vermont or Hawaii), giving Obama in 2012 70% of the vote. Upstate meanwhile would be a lean Democratic state, going to Democrats in presidential elections (Obama won it by 9% both times) but would probably be fairly Republican at state level (my guess it would electorally look like Michigan).

My New York is just the 5 boroughs, the rest of Long Island, and some of the lower Hudson Valley (Westchester and Rockland counties). It would look like this.
