The title says it all. Is it possible to get far in U.S. Politics without being a lawyer?

And why is being a lawyer so common among U.S. politicians today?

I don't think George W. Bush has a law degree, does he?

The voters always love the lawyer. That's why Senator Braley won in a landslide.

In the US Senate race in Wisconsin in 2010, Ron Johnson made an issue of Russ Feingold being a lawyer, and himself being an accountant.  He won.  So it's safe to say yes.

Eisenhower and Grant were generals, and Reagan was an actor (admittedly governor after that, but still).

None of the Bushes were lawyers and McCain had a non-law background and could have been President.

There seems to be more lawyer dominance among Democrats than Republicans. Anyone got a stat on that?

During the Cold War. voters elected GOP presidents who weren't typically lawyers.

Dems like Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Barack Obama were Lawyers due to the fact that most voters are consumers, and with the Downfall of Wallstreet, want them to best represent their interest.

That's why Hillary stands a good chance, because she testified in Congress during Nixon Watergate and because of Bill Clinton.
