But the article mentions that there have been 21 documented cases since 1987 worldwide, of which at least 12 were in the US.

That's more than half alone in the US.

Quite honestly, given post-911 insanity and "social media" narcissism, I'm surprised this isn't happening by the hundreds all over the West. We must be grateful it's only at 21 for now.

Um... I'm pretty sure the main cause of the 12/21 thing is documentation. In many countries, something like this wouldn't even be reported.
