The BBC clearly had an obituary ready to go:

Some definite problems, but all in all, he was the man Singapore needed at the time.  RIP

Think what you want of him, but he spoke his mind far more than most other politicians would dare even dream of doing. Singapore might be a repressive and intrusive state, yes, but he never bothered to claim otherwise. Beyond the rhetoric of "cultural values", he was perfectly fine with admitting that some policies went against custom or ideas of personal autonomy, and that this was for the good of the country. He was never disingenuous about what he was doing.

Sure he said some off-colour things (I'm sure I've mentioned his comment about the dangers of Hispanic immigration to the  United States before), but bluntness is a very rare trait in politicians.

Right.  Certainly not perfect, but it's hard to argue that he was good for the country overall.

The "miracle" of Singapore looks good from a distance, and was indeed good for the people who lived there at independence.

But one mustn't forget that much of that growth has been built on the back of "foreign workers" (many who spend their whole lives there) who are systematically denied the benefits and opportunities of citizenship.  That's not something I'm interested in glossing over.

He basically created the "Chinese model" and it is being copied in a wide range of developing countries, so in that way he probably indirectly did more to prevent the spread of democracy than any other post-WW2 figure.

I'm not at all surprised to see our blue avatars weeping over a semi-dictatorial figure.

No wonder he's been called one of the most influential Asians of the Century.

Close, he established "Disneyland with the gallows".
