How long did you coexist with the Soviet Union?

May 1988 through December 1991, so I was about three and a half when the last person turned off the lights and locked the doors.

I recall a large book that my parents had given me that was basically an atlas/geographical primer aimed at very young children. It had the Soviet Union in it, along with other Cold War Era tombstones like the German Democratic Republic, the People's Republic of Yemen, Yugoslavia and British Hong Kong.

I wish I could remember the fall of the Soviet Union. I think the earliest political event I remember is the 1992 Presidential election.
