Ulan Bator is ridiculously polluted and is even colder than here (it is the world's coldest capital and we're #2).  Having said that, it's probably better than Dubai.

Mongolia is a far mor interesting country, so even if Ulan Bator is cold and polluted I would go with that. I also prefer living in democracies.

I've always had a fascination with Mongolia. Ulaanbaataar any day of the week.

According to wikipedia, Mongolia is the most sparsely-populated independent country in the world, with 4.4 people per square mile.  Obviously, the place should have a more remote feeling than Dubai.

Well, Ulan Bator contains about 40% of the Mongolian population.  The city itself is larger than the entire metro area of the city I was born in (Louisville).

Canada and Australia have very low pop. densities as well yet you won't feel lonely at all if you just live in the habitable areas where most of the population lives. Ulan Bator won't feel sparse for the same reason.
That said, Ulan Bator is the lesser of the two evils here.

Yeah me too; I've always had this weird obsession with Mongolia. It's a really fascinating place.

Ulan Bator any day of the week!

The weather is just another perk to its interesting culture.

True, Ulan Bator is a big enough city.  It would be nice since it would have plenty of amenities but wouldn't be obnoxious like Dubai, and it would be easy to get into the Mongolian wilderness while living in the comforts of the city.

Having a close relationship with a Mongolian girl does bias me. That said, it is not my impression that Mongolia should count as a full democracy.

I've had their milk liquor, it was pretty nice.

I'm not sure - Is there anything to eat in Ulan Bator besides Mongolian food?

Of course Ulan Bator ironically wins, even though Dubai is going to be the most important city in the world by mid-century.

Not all irony votes. Mongolian culture and nature being far more interesting played a big role.
Gulf states also takes a certain kind of mentality to live in long term. They have the large no-rights migrant population that gives them an apartheid state feel and their form of urbanity feels "artificial". You need to be able to stomach all that.

I'd certainly like to visit Dubai, but never live there permanently. I'd rather settle in another good ole post-communist capital Tongue
