Wouldn't Susan Brooks be a pretty top contender?

Not surprising. Congrats Sen. Coats bonus your upcoming retirement. I see Evan Bayh running.

Hoosiers, who are the likeliest candidates?

Isn't asking this a bit pointless if you're just going to spam the thread with who is/isn't running?

I don't think Indiana Democrats have another Joe Donnelly on them. It'll be interesting to see who they put up.

Brad Ellsworth was actually a stronger candidate than Joe Donnelly. He just had the misfortune of running against the wrong candidate in the wrong year.

It's not spam.  Spam is junk, RogueBeaver's posts were legitimate contributions to the thread.

Looks like things are falling into place for the 2016 Democratic Wave.

There's a difference between who's running and who will be the nominees.

Huh?

If you're running for something, I'm pretty sure that makes you a candidate.

Has someone been elected to major statewide office based on their qualifications as a former staffer?

Susan Collins is close, although she had been the party's nominee for Governor in the previous cycle (the primary seems to be a weak field, and she finished third in the General Election to Angus King and a former Democratic Governor.)

I'd love to see John Gregg run, but it probably won't happen.

This! I can't believe people are hoping for Bayh instead of him. Why would be run when he retired, giving up this very seat back in 2010? If he ran again, that would make it clear that he only didn't run in 2010 because he thought he would lose. I'm seriously doubt that Bayh is running, and even if he were, he's overrated, IMO.

Anyway, Likely R, but the right Democrat could make this interesting.

Bayh would not have lost in 2010.

It's ironic you say this, considering Dan Coats held this very seat for a decade, retired, then ran for it again a decade later. Tongue

Fair enough, but he sat out two election cycles, and didn't retire in a Democratic wave year. Bayh would definitely have been vulnerable in 2010, make no mistake about that.

Walorski looks like Sarah Palin's feminist sister who is close actually has views on abortion that challenge Mourdock. It will be interesting if it's different coming from a woman. Could be slightly harder to attack but still far from safe.

If she were to serve along side with Donnelly, it would be interesting to see since he beat her for the House (in 2010 of all years!). I wonder if anything similar ever happened where opponents for a low office both became Senators at the same time from the same state. It seems like a pretty odd occurence.

He might have had a tough race, but it was as winnable as Nevada or Colorado. It certainly would not have been like Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas.

In 2000, John Hoeven defeated Heidi Heitkamp 55-45 for ND Governor. They are now the two U.S. senators from the state.

Other Republican Senators who could retire (or lose primaries).

1.Alabama, Richard Shelby has been in the Senate since 1986.

2.Arizona, John McCain has been in the Senate since 1986 and is also facing a primary challenger who is potentially very strong.

3.Arkansas, John Boozman has had previous health problems though he seems fine now.

4.Florida, Marco Rubio, likely to run for President.

5.Illinois, Mark Kirk has had health problems though he seems fine now.

6.Iowa, Charles Grassley has been in the Senate since forever.

7.Kentucky, Rand Paul is running for President.

8.Lousiana, Dave "Diaper" Vitter is running for governor in 2015 and if he loses that, maybe he'll do us all a favor and go away.

It seems to be the new trend lately to completely ignore people when they say they're not running, so why not?

I hadn't heard that, could you please provide his quote.

Of course, in the rather unlikely event that Boozman doesn't run for reelection, Beebe may change his mind.

Where did Beebe say that? I'm interested.
