A total non-entity as Vice President: http://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1834600_1834604_1834636,00.html

As much as I'd like to see Johnson replaced by someone else, Hamlin would probably make a pitifully weak President.

As much as I'd like to see Johnson replaced by someone else, Hamlin would probably make a pitifully weak President.

To be fair, though, basically every Vice President was a non-entity before the office was reformed. Even politicians like John Adams felt stymied in an job that "[is] nothing, but... may be everything," and those who were outspoken and active in the office were usually hated for it (Adams, Burr, Calhoun). Hamlin's lack of prominence is less his fault than it is the fault of the Founding Fathers for creating a useless office.

I voted FF. He seems to have been a good senator and, in any case, would certainly have been a better president than Andrew Johnson.
