The Republican Party would cease to exist before it were represented in any way, shape, or form by an open atheist

Stark wasn't a senator.

And to answer the OP, we're a long way off from electing an Atheist to statewide office. The first atheist senator or governor will most likely be a Democrat from Hawaii or Vermont, and that probably won't happen for another 10-15 years at the earliest. I don't think it'll be possible to have an openly Atheist Republican Senator or Governor until the 2050s or so.

As far as I know, we have no (open) atheists in the chambers right now, despite Krysten Sinema being well known to refuse to identify with a religion. She has denied the label of atheist.

OP is out of the question for a long time, but were a state to elect an atheist Republican today, the states that would be the best candidates would be New England states.

Lol you never disappoint, TNF.

Shouldn't you be a little more focused on the individuals in the chambers who identify publicly as Catholics, Christians, Jews, etc. but are very likely atheists at heart? If she were truly a coward, she would be one of those people. I have no doubt she is being honest with the public about her religious beliefs.

I'm not sure if she's said anything that would cast doubt on this, but based on what I know about Sinema, she could very well not be an atheist. Atheists aren't the only people who don't identify with a religion.

If a state elects an Atheist Republican, it would be a liberal state like Minnesota or Massachusetts. If we're talking strictly Republican states electing an Atheist Republican, Alaska or maybe Montana would be a good guess.

We've definitely already had a few.  If you are talking about an "open" atheist, then it is probably a state in New England.  Maybe Maine.  I think Alaska is kookier than most people perceive it to be.

Kooky maybe, but not in a religious way. It's one of the least religious States.

I'm aware, but the least religious state in America is still pretty religious, and the politically active conservatives that elect most of the statewide officials in that state certainly are.  Everyone Alaska has put on a national stage has been a little nutty.  It's got a unique culture to it, for sure.  That's why I don't think Alaska is going to give us our first open atheist.  It's just my opinion.

Heck had there ever been an atheist Democrat senator?

This is a complete list of openly atheist or agnostic members of Congress and governors ever.

Former Rep. Pete Stark D-CA
Rep. Kyrsten Sinema D-AZ
Former Gov. Culbert Olson D-CA

A truly pathetically short list, and they're all Democrats.

Atheists are the most hated and distrusted minority in America.  This is not a surprise.

Jesse Ventura was an atheist, correct? Someone in that mould would fit your model well.

I'm sure there have been plenty of politicians who are privately atheists. I would not be surprised if most of the Jewish politicians in congress are atheist and only culturally Jewish. See Barney Frank. I also would not be surprised if 10 years from now President Obama says he's an atheist in an interview.

To answer the OPs question, it's definitely NH. They like those wacky Ayn Rand flavored Republicans.

Athiest? Never. Non-religious/non-specified? Could be elected in most places.

I would be shocked if Bernie Sanders is not an atheist.

Atheists are the most hated and distrusted minority in America.  This is not a surprise.

This is a ridiculously false statement. Atheists might be the most disliked minority, but there's a huge difference between being disliked and just outright hated. I'd say muslims are probably the most hated.

If a state elects an Atheist Republican, it would be a liberal state like Minnesota or Massachusetts. If we're talking strictly Republican states electing an Atheist Republican, Alaska or maybe Montana would be a good guess.

Jesse Ventura was an atheist, correct? Someone in that mould would fit your model well.

I like to think that America has forgotten Jesse Ventura held elected political office. But yes, he is an atheist. At least he is now. He wasn't very open about it during his time served as Governor.
