Heck had there ever been an atheist Democrat senator?

Rep. Stark was from California for ages

Stark wasn't a senator.

And to answer the OP, we're a long way off from electing an Atheist to statewide office. The first atheist senator or governor will most likely be a Democrat from Hawaii or Vermont, and that probably won't happen for another 10-15 years at the earliest. I don't think it'll be possible to have an openly Atheist Republican Senator or Governor until the 2050s or so.
