It's an amusing affectation. Partly because they often aren't all that well aware of the rules and structure of English prose...

I thought most euros speak American English? All the young euros I meet especially those educated in international schools have American twangs.

A delightful irony of the modern world is that the posher someone from a Continental country is, the more likely they are to sound quasi-American when speaking in English.

Though it should be pointed out that strictly speaking 'British English' is an Americanism.
