Hillary Clinton, Angela Merkel and Marine Le Pen are likely to be the three most powerful female politicians in 2017. How close and fruitful will their cooperation be?

I really doubt Marine Le Pen will become PM. Whoever makes it to the runoff against her will wind up with the support of everyone to her left.

To answer your question, though, Clinton and Merkel are both pragmatic and would get along fine, barring the occasional tiff over policy issues. I imagine Le Pen would be fairly marginalized by the world at large, with her being treated like a one-term annoyance unless she starts doing things they can't ignore like mass deportations.

Whenever a Front National candidate makes it into the runoff for President in France, the left and the right combine to make sure that the Le Pens don't make it into power.

Polling for the past several months have shown Le Pen would defeat Hollande modestly in a runoff, although she still trails Sarkozy for now.

Can you imagine a meeting with those three? Nothing would get done. They'd sit around talking about shopping and boys.

I don't think Hollande is going to make it into the runoff.

I'm inclined to agree with your prediction. I was just noting the Le Pens aren't as fringe as they once were, unfortunately.

One thing is I think pretty clear (as of yet). Le Pen will win the first round. The actual question is just about who comes second.
If it's Sarkozy, then he will recapture the presidency. If Hollande gets second place, France will have une présidente.

If Le Pen became President of France I think I'd be sick.

Fortunately we have Sarkozy to save us.

France would become an international pariah if Le Penn got in.

La Pen's definitely an underdog in the 2017 election.

Hillary Clinton may not win.

Merkel's been Chanceller of Germany since 2005, the longest-serving incumbent head of government in the European Union. So there's been speculation she might step down before the next election.
