...at the time of its occurence.

It has to be 1968. MLK and RFK assassinations, incumbent President being challenged and dropping out, convention rioting, racist major third-party candidate, political giants competing for both the Democratic and Republican nominations, candidates who would have satisfied our resident True Leftists, as well as our Moderate Heroes, our liberals and our conservatives. Oh, and there was a war going on as well. And the election turned out to be close.

Honorable mentions to 1912, 1992, 1988, 2000 (for the election night itself and the aftermath), 1948, 1860, 1972, 1896 and 1960.

I always thought 1992 because of Perot's candidacy would've been a lot of fun with the modern day internet around.

'68 and '92, although I think Perot's supporters would be insufferable on the internet. Oh 1984 would be fun for the schadenfreude.

Yep, 1992 and 1968 would've been WILD on here.

Perot probably could have improved his performance by a few percentage points with the benefit of social media.

The 1968 campaign would have been great, as would election night.

As far as election nights go, 1948's would have been crazy, once people started to realize that Truman wasn't going to lose.

How about 1800?  The first real nasty presidential campaign in our history, between two Founding Fathers.  The rhetoric would probably be even nastier on here.

1992 would have been extremely interesting to discuss here up until the DNC, when Clinton got such a big polling boost that he was favored through to election day.  In May 1992 or so, the national polling was virtually a 3-way tie between Bush, Clinton, and Perot, and all the projections were for an election with no EC majority.  Imagine if we'd had as many state polls back then as we get nowadays.

I'm surprised 2000 has not been mentioned more, with all those hanging chads, and endless projections of the vote count, then Gore's strategy of cherry picking three counties to recount, flopping out (Dade and Palm Beach net him next to nothing, with Dade then stopping the recount, when it came time to count the Cuban precincts), all the legal maneuvers, and so forth. I know I had a grand time back then as a Freeper. Smiley

I think 1976 might have produced some extremely interesting debate. The incumbent was appointed after a scandal and survived a challenge from the right that presaged the direction of the GOP. The challenger was in some ways an old-school southern Dem who got into hot water with remarks during the primary suggesting that the government should not force neighborhoods to integrate, and brought a strong view of religion informing his style of governance. It would interesting to see how today's Dems and Pubs came down as the race was progressing.

1980 would be entertaining, watching most of the forum write off Reagan until about a week before the election. IceSpear would presumably have a Ted Kennedy '80 sig.

I think most people on this forum would have supported Ted Kennedy in 1980.

Of course as we found out with Atlas Modarn, the real entertainment would come from the forum reacting to historical events, such as Tender Branson posting weirdo theories like "I believe Oswald was having sex in the Book Depository and accidentally fired the rifle" while Solarstorm puts the Zodiac Killer's letters in his sig.
