After the tumult that was the Election of 1896, the presidential campaign of 1900 seems set to be a much more straight-forward contest. After his narrow victory four years ago, President Bryan was able to secure passage of legislation permitting the free coinage of silver, and now seeks a second term on a platform calling for an eight-hour day, a Constitutional Amendment establishing an income tax, and continued non-intervention in the ongoing struggle with Cuba. Among those campaigning for Bryan is Indiana State Representative Eugene V. Debs, a labor leader who is himself seeking election to the governorship on the Populist Party line. Bryan's Democratic opponents, meanwhile, have nominated William R. Hearst, a newspaperman and reformer from New York. As Bryan and Hearst share many of the same domestic views, the battle between them has been mostly over foreign policy, with Hearst calling for American intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. Meanwhile, the new American Party - the result of a fusion of the Republican and Prohibition parties - has nominated Maine Governor Thomas B. Reed on a platform calling for national prohibition, a return to the gold standard, and moderate efforts to dismantle the most dangerous of the trusts. Reed's running mate is Argonia Mayor Susanna Salter, the first female candidate for national office since Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Can the "Great Commoner" prevail against William "Also Randolph" Hearst and "Czar Reed"? The choice is yours.

Hmm... If Bryan and Hearst are similar, then I'll go for the one that will help the Cubans. Hearst.

WTF is wrong with you Atlas?

I thought the fact that Debs is campaigning for Bryan would have made him a lock...

And where are all these Reed voters coming from!?

Then Bryan's better, because we all know how Latin American intervention turns out.

this is relevant.

I may consider Hearst though if he runs in 1904 just for variety sake, but not now.

Disaffected Parker supporters, methinks.

I'm surprised by the results thus far as well. To think that Bryan would have a harder time of winning reelection than Richard M. Johnson... but the night's still young.

The subtraction of my vote for Bryan breaks the tie.

1900 Presidential Election

Governor Thomas B. Reed (American-Maine)/ Mayor Susanna Salter (American-Kansas): 237 Electoral Votes; 42.1% popular votes
President William J. Bryan (People's-Nebraska)/ Vice President Horace Boies (People's-Iowa): 182 Electoral Votes; 39.5% popular votes
Congressman William R. Hearst (Democratic-New York)/ Mayor Carter Harrison, Jr. (Democratic-Illinois): 18.4%

In an unexpected turn of events, Governor Thomas B. Reed of the new American Party upset the Populist ticket headed by President Bryan, uniting the Northeast and Midwest against the West and South. Reed's victory was fueled in part by the defection of conservative Democrats, who had supported Alton B. Parker at their party's convention but found themselves unable to back the radical Hearst. Thus, for the first time in history, and incumbent Populist had been denied reelection, while neither a Democrat nor a Populist would inhabit the White House for the first time since 1880.
