I think that Vermont is pretty clearly -2.344352 on the Economic axis and -5.3464334 on the Social Axis, while the UK is -8.9605332222 on the Economic axis and -2.3334343 on the Social Axis.

That's just my opinion though.

Vermont would not be in favor of the sort of casino finance and shameless catering to wealthy foreign elites that the UK has opted to base its modern economy on. It all makes Manhattan look downright prudent and buttoned-down by comparison.

How can you compare a huge multi million country with a small state? as a micro-state Vermont can be more homogeneous than the UK.

I'd argue that any of the states that voted >55% Obama both times are more liberal than the UK as a whole.

Fiscally, UK.  Socially, Vermont, but it's close.

Vermont is, but it is comparing America's most liberal state (and a very homogeneous one) to an entire country, so it's hardly fair.

How about CA vs. UK?  Wouldn't that be more fair given populations?  FWIW I think it's narrowly CA.

Comparing the different parts of the UK I would assume it would be something like:

Scotland, Wales & Northern England: fiscally to the left of every US state
Southern England: typical republic state.

On social issues it is more tricky..
