All this thread proves is that the native born white American will no longer fight.

Mark my words, if there's another big war, the Mexicans are going to be like the Irish during the Civil War.
This place isn't a mirror image of America....not even close.  We're full of smart pussies.

Either way, the days of the US needing tens of millions of able bodied men to fight major wars is in the past.  Thank Og.

Sure it isn't, but it's a least a decent representation of white Northern males.

Maybe, but I know a lot of people in that category who served proudly. Although my circle would be Catholic school educated, which I anecdotally think is an over-represented group, especially in the officer ranks.

Maybe it's just because the majority of us come from a generation that has seen half (more then half for some) of our lives consumed by endless and utterly pointless war. Don't get me wrong, if ISIS somehow managed to invade New York City or even if I felt we had another genuine nazi like threat that required everyone to fight and I was sure that it would involve one side defeating the other I'd gladly do my part, but pointless unending war against a vague concept like terror which has if anything arguably put us on more danger? "Ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son."

I'm too old to be drafted now but if I was I wouldn't serve obviously.

Damn I wish opebo was around for this thread, it'd be awesome to see what he'd write about "The Bad Place". Sad

Either the Army or the Marines, so I could get some worthwhile training out of it. Voted Marines.

I would serve regardless of my feelings toward the war because I wouldn't want to disconnect myself from the working class majority getting sent off to fight. I'd probably try and organize within the military and end up getting court-martialed or something.

I'd want to join the navy. Not only because I enjoy being on the water, but because it's the safest branch to join when the people we seem to have the most conflict with are in some middle eastern desert.

Air Force. I'm a strong supporter of the future of technology in war and consider the Air Force the most forward-thinking of the branches, both in terms of new fighting techniques and how they treat their recruits.

While I strongly oppose the draft, it's the best option were I to find myself in this situation.

Is there "if I have to be drafted, can I apply for an commission?" program? Serious question. Because in that case I'd sign up for the Navy, else probably the Air Force.

So you want to join the branch that had to go find and kill Osama bin Laden (who was nowhere near water)?

I doubt they'd be putting draftees on SEAL Team 6.

Air Force Jag, Intelligence, or Chaplinacy

I actually considered going in this direction however I didn't feel led to.

Heck, if this didn't work and if my number was bad enough, I'd probably apply to Officer Candidate School anyway to get one step ahead. It would depend, I guess, on how people were treating members of the military in what I assume would be a time of crisis- if service was being looked on with befuddlement and disdain or understood in the context of events. I wouldn't want to lose too many opportunities if it was the former, but if that wasn't the case I could see myself applying voluntarily.

Army, I guess? With my plans for grad school, I'd be a good fit for military intelligence depending on when I got drafted.

See, I suppose nowadays it'd be different with so many people going to college, but I feel like there'd be other routes for a degree holder than just being drafted.

The Navy SEALS are a special forces unit, which can't be joined by everyone.
Saying you have top joint he SEALS is like saying you have to become a fighter pilot if you want to join the Air Force.
